Summer is over
My summer student left in mid-August, leaving me to do all my experiments myself... haha. Well, not like I did many, since I had to prepare lab meeting the following Friday, and then hang out with the bf for 2 good weeks. And since he's flown back to London, I can sadly conclude that summer is really over. The bf was here from 25 Aug to 8 Sep, and we went to Cancun, Mexico for a week during that period. Photos will come soon, but I'll say that we had a really good time, ate and dranks lots, and got really tanned, if not slightly burnt. I have a pretty ugly tan line from my boyshort-style swimming costume bottoms... luckily I don't normally wear belly-baring clothes.
Anyway, the bf left yesterday, but the separation wasn't so bad this time. We decided on a drop-and-go tactic, since that seems to make it easier (i.e. less tears in public). So I drove him to the airport, talking and thinking matter-of-factly all the way, pulled in to the drop-off zone at the airport, stopped the engine, got out of the car, helped him get his luggage out of the boot, shut the boot, gave a quick hug and kiss, got back in the car and drove off. At first I was concentrating on filtering into the correct lane to get onto the highway, but once I was on my way, the flood gates opened. Kind of like when a baby gets an injection for the first time - there's a slight delay after the needle is removed before they realize it actually hurts and then start crying. Anyway, crying while driving is not a very good idea, because tears blur your vision and you need your vision while driving. However, it did cross my mind that if a cop stopped me for speeding (well, I was following traffic...), I'd have the crying act down pat already. Luckily I was familiar with the route and there wasn't much traffic, so it wasn't too bad. Plus I'd stopped crying by the time I reached campus. And since that was the end of my tears, I'd say this is the fastest ever recovery time after separation. I'm pretty impressed myself.
I guess having some tasks to finish also took my mind off the separation. Like returning DVDs to the library, writing a recipe for a friend's wedding gift, sorting out credit card bills, calling mum etc. And today was nice, since I got to talk to the bf over webcam while having breakfast, then went for lunch and grocery shopping with friends, before coming back to help prepare a birthday dinner party for the housemate's bf. Tonight's dinner was really good too, since we had Singapore-style chilli crabs and black pepper crabs (prepared by Nana the amazing cook), tomato prawns, grilled chicken wings (also by Nana) and chicken feet (by JJ, one of the new ASTAR PhD ppl). Then the whole bunch of us settled down with some Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Beringer Nightingale and of course, chocolate ice cream cake from Coldstone. Good times :)
Well, I guess it's back to proper work starting tomorrow. Better get some good experiments done before my boss starts giving me another pep-talk about "owning my project" :)
